Juniperberry, like many essential oils, has a really lovely smell once it is diluted down into a carrier or blended with other oils. However the aroma of it undiluted and in isolation is not unpleasant. When buying juniperberry make sure that the bottle actually says ‘Juniperberry’ not just ‘Juniper’ as there is an oil which is obtained from the leaves and twigs and it is far inferior in terms of therapeutic value to the oil obtained from the berries. Juniper is most well known for its role in detoxification.
Juniperberry essential oil is valuable for detoxification in both the physical and emotional realm. Since ancient times juniperberry has been used for purification in spiritual practices because of its ability to cleanse and disperse negative vibrations and energies. Its cleansing properties mean that it is a very useful oil to turn to for space clearing at home – blend with lemon and frankincense in your oil burner – it is fresh, sweet, zesty and works on a spiritual level to create a healthier atmosphere in your living space.
For individuals who are feeling psychologically ‘stuck’ juniperberry can help create a shift, clearing out old thought patterns, particularly worrisome ones or those that are involved with too much focus on self, in order to refresh and make room for the new.
Taking an aromatic bath with a few drops of juniper is a wonderful way to experience the benefits of any essential oil and juniperberry is no exception – combined with grapefruit it will cleanse and uplift like no other mix.
Physically it is a fantastic oil to use for urinary complaints – it has a diuretic effect as well as tonifying, purifying and stimulating systems so that the body eliminates waste more effectively. In addition, like many essential oils it has an antiseptic quality which makes it valuable in supporting the treatment of infections of the bladder and/or kidneys. Use juniperberry in a blend in the evening or as part of a foot rub before bed for best results – overnight is when the body detoxifies most effectively.
It is a particularly useful oil to use for acne prone skin due to its detoxifying, antiseptic and astringent properties. For teenage boys it is a good oil to choose because the aroma is less feminine than some of its counterparts.
