Essential Oil: Vetiver (Vetiveria Zizanoides)
Plant Part: Steam distilled from roots
Aroma: Deep, earthy, pungent, root like – base note
Vetiver is a grass which is native to India. Vetiver essential oil is from the roots of plants, and these roots grow particularly deep into the earth. It has a deep dark, heavy earthy and very full fragrance that is appealing to some and very definitely not to others.
In the emotional realm, vetiver essential oil is a very valuable oil for people who ‘are airy fairy’ or live to much with ‘their head in the clouds’ as it is grounding and stabililising – connecting users with the earths vital energies, regenerating and nourishing and bringing both emotional and physical strength. Vetiver is deeply relaxing and some know it as ‘The Oil of Tranquility’.
Vetiver is a useful anti-septic, inhibiting the growth of bacteria in cuts and wound and also encouraging the regeneration of new skin. It is used often for this purpose in its country of origin, India.
It has a tonifying effect on many of the body’s systems and there for is beneficial for boosting the immune system.
In natural perfumery, when used carefully vetiver essential oil is a base note that can add unrivalled depth to the character of a perfume. It should be added drop by drop – less is definitely more and too much (which may still be only a little!) will over power.
