What is a natural perfume and how does it differ from a ‘normal’ perfume?
A natural perfume is one that is made solely from natural ingredients with no synthetics or chemicals added. The natural ingredients botanicals and are in the form of essential oils, absolutes or CO2 extractions. They come from the twigs, stems, leaves, roots, flowers, fruits or seeds of the plants and trees. Aromatic plant material may be processed in one of the following ways – steam distillation, CO2 extraction, solvent extraction, cold pressing, enfleurage, or maceration.
A ‘normal’ perfume is made largely from synthetic or chemical ingredients – they are called aroma chemicals. These aromatic compounds are produced in a laboratory and although their fragrance is based on the aromas of their natural counterparts, there is nothing natural about them. Many perfume companies will go to some lengths to try and convince you that their products are made with natural ingredients. There is growing and awareness and concern about the potential risk to personal health of many of the ingredients found in chemical perfumes.
At Circle of Life Botanicals we use only natural botanical ingredients. With the array of natural aromatic materials available, natural perfumers are able to find plenty of scope to create beautiful fragrances without any chemical ingredients.
Natural perfumes have a lovely way of interacting with the chemistry of the wearers own skin and body – as though there is a natural affinity there…only wearers of an all natural perfume will have this wonderful, rather intimate experience with their fragrance.
Why do you only use natural ingredients in your perfumes?
We only use natural ingredients in my perfumes because we are passionate about natural health and the health of our beautiful, amazing and fragile planet. Our products give discerning and environmentally conscious consumers an alternative to chemical fragrances. Making a product that is risky for personal health and contributing to the chemical overload in our natural environment doesn’t feel good for us.
How do I use your products?
All our natural perfume oils are in 10ml roll-on bottles. We’ve purposely designed them to be used on the go so they are perfect to fit into your pocket or handbag. Just roll the fragrance onto your pulse points at wrists and neck whenever you desire. Other places you might like to apply are the insides of the elbows, nape of the neck or even behind your knees!
Our bath and body oils are designed to be massaged directly onto skin where or to be added to running bath water. However you are using them, you’ll find they are easily absorbed, extremely nourishing and rich with a gorgeous silky skin feel, but are not in the slightest bit heavy. In a bath less 1/2 a teaspoon is all you need, to massage directly into skin, use the size of a 50c piece. They are not designed to be used a facial moisturisers.
How long do your natural perfume oils last for?
Our natural perfume oils are layer upon layer of beautiful essential oils that evaporate from your skin at different rates. All perfumes work this way. You can expect the scent of a natural perfume to last several hours. The exact longevity time varies greatly from person to person as we all have different skin types, body temperatures and senses of smell. Because there are no synthetic fixatives used in natural perfumery it is unlikely that you will still be able to smell the scent on your skin the following morning as you can with many chemical products.
Circle of Life Botanicals natural perfumes come in gorgeous 10 ml roll-on bottles that are designed to fit into bags and pockets. This makes it very easy to re-apply whenever you want to, no matter what you are doing.
What is the shelf life of your natural perfumes?
Like most all natural products our perfume oils don’t like heat and direct sunlight. If you keep your natural perfume oil somewhere that is not too hot and out of direct sunlight it will last for about 2 years from when you start using it.
Why do you use jojoba oil as the carrier oil?
Jojoba oil is actually a wax ester, rather than an oil, and as such it doesn’t break down and go rancid easily as other carrier oils can do. It has a great shelf life and extends the shelf life of the essential oil ingredients in the perfumes. Jojoba oil is also completely odourless, making it the perfect choice for a natural fragrance.
Why is there a slight residue at the bottom of my ‘Me, Myself and I’ and ‘Heartspace’ and ‘Rise and Shine’ perfumes?
This is completely normal. These 3 blends all contain varying amounts of vanilla which is an incredibly viscous oil – in fact so much so that it needs to be warmed thoroughly in order to be worked. ‘Me, Myself and I’ also contains labdanum absolute which is also very viscous and can sometimes cause a blend to have a slightly cloudy appearance. Be assured, however your natural perfume oil is still perfectly fine, not going rancid, not hard to use and of course smells amazing.
Are your products suitable for vegans?
Yes!! All these natural fragrances, aromatherapy products and skin care products are suitable for all our vegan friends. We don’t use any palm oil or animal ingredients and Circle of Life Botanicals is registered with Choose Cruelty Free. This means that none of our ingredients has been cruelly-derived and none of them or the end product has ever been tested on animals.
Are there any precautions I should be aware of?
As with any product that you are applying to your skin for the first time, it is wise to try one small patch first. Nobody can know how they will react to a new product whether it is all natural or not. If you have a known allergy or intolerance you’ll find all the ingredients of each product listed on the website and on each product, so make sure you’ve read all the small print carefully before making a purchase.
There are many essential oils that are not recommended for women who are pregnant. However, once your baby is born, natural perfumes are a great choice as they are safe and their scents are generally not as overwhelming for your baby.
